Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer and is gearing up to come back to school in a couple of weeks. I am personally very excited to begin serving you and your children as Principal at Westland High School. My name is Steve Gehlert and it is a privilege to introduce myself to you and your family. This is my fifteenth year in education. I spent eight years in the classroom and the last six as an administrator. I am thrilled to be back at Westland High School where I taught Spanish from 2004-2008. Please know that my door is always open. If you ever have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call or come and see me.

Our mission is to support your child in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the arts, or wherever they find their passions. It is our desire that students feel comfortable and safe while constantly challenging themselves to maximize their potential.

This year we will be implementing an exciting new program that has been proven to be highly effective in schools across the country. The name of the program is PBIS or Positive Behavior Intervention Systems. The purpose is to encourage, train, teach and coach positive behaviors using research-based strategies and rewards systems that are meaningful for students.

Academically, our mission is to foster an environment whereby students have specific goals and a plan for post-graduation success. This includes but is not limited to attending a two or four-year college, enlisting for military service, or joining the workforce. High school students have more access to college curriculum than ever before and the best part is it’s FREE for the family! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY! Speak with a counselor or administrator about college classes that would be appropriate for your child. It does not matter if you have a freshman or a senior. It is never too late or too early to begin this conversation.
